Final productions

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I feel i have progressed so much from my preliminary task to my final products. i have learnt how to use multiple programmes i had never used before, such as Photoshop-and learned to use the tools in this programme professionlly.
Looking back now, i realise i needed to research real school magazines to achieve a professional looking front cover and contents page, there was no real planning into where i wanted my photos to go and what effect i wanted to give, this has subsequently shown and given a bad overall feeling to my product. I have gained knowledge and skills that i didnt even no were possible before starting this project and so am very pleased with the proffessional looking outcome i have acheived. i have learnt where how and why to position things in certain positions, i did this through research on current media products. i have learnt to use photoshop in a more mature and classy way since doing my preliminary task and i feel it has really shown through here.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

As i had never used a Mac computer before, it did take some time getting used t
o, but with a little bit of
practise i finally learnt how to log on and open photoshop. All the icons and names were so much different to a Windows operating computer. I did quite enjoy using the Macs once i had started to use them and got used to them, though, i think i would have liked to have been able to use a software that i was more familiar with.

The main part of production during this project was being able to use Photoshop, this is a
programme used for editing on the Macs. After fiddling about with it to to make my prelimin
ary task, i kind of got the gist of how to use it, thought it was very complicated and i realised i had to be very delicate and correct when using the tools on this programme-
especially magnetic lassoo. I didnt know how to use this tool. when i first opened Photoshop Elements, but once i had used it when fiddling around, i gained skills and knowledge and managed to be able to use it professionally in my final product.

Blogging was another programme i was unfamilliar with. i had no knowledge of how to use it and had no idea it could be used to store data such as my as media project for you, the examiner to see. i think with technology becoming a bigger and better thing to our everyday lives, learning to use blogger and putting it to good use was a good skill i have gained through doing this project. i think using the internet to store data is a good idea, this is because if your computer crashes-which i realised Macs do, quite alot, you would have your work saved automatically on the blogg post as it saves every time you stop typing, i think this is a really good feature.

How did you attract/address your target audience?

The audience i am targeting will see the title and immeadiately want to pick it up as they can see the title, in this font-its just in theuir face-PROOF. They are being told there will be no lies in this magazine, everything is real proof. just what my kind of target audince wants to hear, because they cant be bothered for chit chat or time wasting, they are nasty, moody, horomonal teenagers who are probably high.

The way i have the model posing, just looking straight into the camera, it think really makes them feel connected with the photo, this was the technique i originally wanted after taking some sample pictures. The majority of my target audience would have seen the film The Dark Knight, this is Batman, the newest one, and in it, The Joker plays a big role, my target audience would starigh away, once they had seen just the lips, would know and understand the vibe and who it is. The posture of the model-slouching shoulders and head slightly down, looking up with his eyes, makes the reader feel iry and in doom, this was the efect i was going for.

The way i have used just the names of other bands on the front cover really grabs my audience in as they cant be bothered for chit chat-they just want to get to the point, so there is no describing The Killers, for intance, as 'the best hit selling rock band', they just dont want to read that. And the colours i have used draw in the audience because they are looking for something different something interesting-unlike any other.

Who would be your audience for your media product?

Young people ranging from older teens to mid aged-twenties, students. People who enjoy listening and reading about indie/rock/metal, these people, would be a majority of students, would all probably be in huge debt or just broke, and so this is why the magazine would only cost £1.70, being a real competitor to all other existing brands. My magazine would be sold in Tescos, which is a large retailer for magazines and books, it would be easy for the reader to buy so that they dont have to go to somewhere like WHSmith, as a] they would be more expensive to distribute in, and b] there is allways a local Tescos, where as WHSmith is not. I have a previous target profile if you click on this link.

What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?

I think the institution supporting best-selling music magazines such as Q and Kerrang, Bauer, would distribute my magazine, this is because it allready has a good reputation and can guarentee me sales. They have a good portfolio of some of the best magazines in the UK, they are hugely successful. Music magazines they distribute are Q and Kerrang, these hold similar content to my magazine [Proof]. I feel Proof would fit into their family easily as it is a rock magazine, though it doesnt soley focus on this, it also includes indie and metal, this would mean Proof would not be competition for Kerrang, neither for Q as y target audience is younger teens-twenties, males and females, whereas Q is soely aimed at more mature men.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

My media product uses a model to whom is wearing heavy makeup and fancy dress clothing, all of which has been recycled and reconstructed. The target audience for Vibe magazine are young people from around 17-26 who wear designer labels, statement heavy jewellery and care about reputations alot, whereas the target audience for my media product consist of young individuals who couldnt care less what people think of them, these kind of people could go a couple of days without washing. The age market is for 17-24 year olds who enjoy raves, individuality and truth. The ways i have represented the indie/rock/metal group would be young whie people, this is only because when researching and analysing current media products, i hadnt seen any black people used to model or feature throughout, this is mainly becasue black people are more associated with rap and hip hop. I am in no way biased towards white people and have no problems with featuring people of black/asian race in my magazine.
Popstar! magazine is aimed at 10-16 year olds, though i feel 16 is far too old to be 'reading' this kind of magazine, as it is hardly even reading. On Popstar! magazine, many well known Disney chanell stars are used, this attracts the readers as the majority of children this day in age watch Disney chanell daily. Unlike Kerrang!, Popstar! uses all stars who have never been in any sex/drugs/drink scandals, this is becasue they are trying to represent their own social class
, which would be to have the children stay angelic and sweet and not to turn into nasty little hormonal teenagers, whereas on my front cover i have used a model as the joker who has fictionlly killed people and commited multiple offences against the law.

EVALUTATION

In what ways does your media product use develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Throughout my music magazine [front cover, contents and double page spread] i have used many conventions and also challenged some. Starting off with my front cover, i have used the conventional technique of the model looking straight into the camera, this creates a connection between the model-usually celebrity, and the reader-usually an Average Joe. It gives the illusion the model is looking straight out of the picture of the page and straight at the reader, helping the media product to connect with the taget audience on a more personal base. For this reason, many music magazines like the one i have produced, use this kind of cover image.

Like most magazines, the title of my magazine is at the top in a font which stands out. Here is a link to my analysis of my title fonts and why i used the one i have. One of the conventions i have used it for the main photo to overlap the title. I havent used this convetion to the maximum...but i have used it in a way i can compare it to a real media product. I have overlapped the block behind the title, just like this Q magazine cover i have found of google. So i class this as a conventional thing. https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEdtFhJLqoibqxBFYKFApd2mmhNyjIIqlow-DqY8w-zG3O-QLS4C0nAgcLuUE24xcqcAi4HLTxXEzdQZtRAw-0ilBPOERw-3lCvSt7N2wjlGAfcheGTZXCUDBua2_i2VXNbYUMH9P_wvI/s1600/PROOF.jpghfDeHHhoI/AAAAAAAAAEo/ClhI0nxEhG8/s1600/PROOF.jpghfDeHHhoI/AAAAAAAAAEo/ClhI0nxEhG8/s1600/PROOF.jpg

Other conventional features i have chosen to include on my magazine front cover include a barcode and other pictures featured inside. I would say on my front cover i have challenged the forms and features of conventional products as i decided with the image i have, some things like a conventional a strapline would confuse my front cover and make it very in your face. Now looking back and analysing my work, i would say that i would like to have included one more conventional feature into my front cover and that would be to insert a pug, either on the left hand side, half way down the page, or on the top right hand corner, underneath 'ozzy ozborn advice inside', i think this could have made my product more classy and attractive.

My contents page uses multiple conventional features such as keeping the same colour scheme from the cover, this is used in almost all magazines, this technique is used to help the magazine flow. Inspiration i have used to contstuct my contents page has come from the music magazine 'Drummer'. Many music magazines feature photos of the stories in the magzazine on the contents page, as i have done in mine, this would be classed as a conventional feature, it makes the reader want to see whats inside. Interesting and quirky photos make the reader want to read further into the magazine because it catches their attention. on my contents page, i have used several images and merged them to form a background, then featured photos include a screenshot of my doublepage spread which shows what the double page spread will look like, a photo of a uni room, and a feature on The Killers concert. I have used the conventional feature of using contrasting coloured fonts for the page number, titles and sub heading/little insight to whats included. I have also included the date and issue number which is another conventional feature.

My double page spread is very conventional, starting with the main background photo, having one very large image dminating the page is very conventional for a double page spread. the background ger was a photo i took when i went to see the killers. i used this to set the tone and layered up more photos and writing to get the effect i was going fr. I used my skills i had improved on to make my model, The Joker, look like he is actually singing, you can just about see it throgh the middle of the two collums on the right hand side. Another conventional feature i have used is the big, bold headline at the top. again, i have stuck with the same colours throughout the magazine to keep it flowing from page to page, and also the same font for headlines. One thing i have just realised i have forgotten whilst annalysing my double page spread, is i have wanted to through out my design work and production, i wanted to put a quote on the left hand side. i am very annoyed that i have forgotten this one thing. so technically, i have challenged the convention. joker playing cards and faces have been incorporated into the double page spread to set the tone and give the impression of laughter, risk, and games. I feel the page is well layed out and gives the overall appearance of a real media product. the layout is very conventional whch makes it look professional. One other convetional feature i have realised i have used is that there are no black/mixed race people in my magazine, this is becasue when researching magazines, i didnt see any black people in current existing media products. This would be because black people are more assocciated with rap and hip-hop and i so have chosen to not include any black people in my media product, this is becasue i felt if i did i would be confusing what my actual genre was.
