Title-Proof-font ideas

Here are the fonts i am testing out to use on my final media product [front cover].

I like this font, which is called Old Thunder, it has been downloaded off http://www.fonts.com/ , it is £23.00 but i have just used a sample so that if i do wish to use it i will purchase it, if i dont then it would have been a waste of £23.00 . I like this font because it is kind of old circus style font, kind of comicy which really suits the style i am trying to produce, and definately suits the main image.

This font has my mind boggled a bit, i cant decide if i like it or not and would take it into further consideration. I think if i did use it, i would have to fill in the white with black so that the whole letter would be bold. This has also been downloaded off of the internet at http://www.freefonts.com/ .

This font is very old style comic. It is on photoshop, i do like it though i cant imagine it being my title on my front cover, this is because its too playfull.

I really like this font, it is called Portagol on Photoshop Elements. It's like a stamp you get on evidence bags in a courtroom, or print you get on boxes when in the army/ on explosives. I think i am definately going to be using this font for my title on my front cover. It really stands out.

Title ideas

My music magazine is aimed at individual, quirky people, with this, my magazine title needs to reflect it and be memorable, punchy and fun!

I have listed some ideas of what i think i might incorporate into my product. i will also base one of my questions on my questionaire about the title.

Fallen

Encore

DWI-Down With It

Base

Proof

Sound

Fallen-I dont why i chose this as an idea for my magzine title, it kind of sprung to mind and i liked it, to be honest, i'm not too keen on this idea now and definately wont't be using it in my final product.

Encore-Encore means a demand by an audience for an additional performance. This would be a good way of getting the reader to want to read the magazine, its like they want more. This would be a very good title for my target audience.

DWI-This is an acronym for 'Down With It', this means that someone is on trend/in the crowd really. Using this as a title for a music magazine would tell the readers that the magazine they are reading is down with the music, latest gossip, artists and music. It would in effect make them feel on trend, knowledgeable of current gossips and news about music and make them want to buy the magazine in the future so they are always in the know.

Base-Base obviously means a beat in a musical piece. The base, without it, the music woudlnt be there. Using this as the title for my magazine would tell the reader that without this music magzine-there would be no music, nothing to write about. This title is very memorable, as it is punchy and bold. I really like this title, it is definately a candidate for my magazine.

Proof-Proof means 'the evidence to show that something is true, or win an argument.' Proof being my title, would mean that everything inside the magazine, would efficiently, be truth. This would tell the reader that they can guarentee no lies, just news and truth. It is quite a punchy title which is good, it would stay in the readers mind, so if bought again, it can easily be remebered. I think this may be a candidate for the title of my magazine.

Sound-Is one of the 5 senses, it is what makes music a possible thing. It being the title for my music magazine, would efficiently describe the acual reason for the magazine itself. I do like this title though it seems a bit dull and un-orignal to me. I dont't think i will be incorporating this title in my magazine.

Sample photo for front cover 4

I have finally found a male model willing to go to the extremes of wearing makeup and dressing up as the joker for me. As there was a lot of preparation to this photo, such as hair and makeup, i asked my friends who fit in with my target market if they would come and see my model dressed up and look at a couple of sample photos for me to tell me what they think. They were very impressed and made it obvious that this is the style of image they would like to see on a rock/indie/metal magazine. They told me that the way he was looing into the camera really caught their attention and could see this kind of photo on a real magazine-so obviously this really is a convention of a real media product. I have dressed my model stereo-typicaly as The Joker, this is because I want my 'celebrity' to be a well-known artist, not only because he looks like The Joker, but becasue he impersonates him too. It's his personality. I think i have got the hair, makeup and clothing to a T and will definately be using one of the photos I have taken today on my front cover.

Sample photo for front cover 3

I have used my sister here to give me a pose which has no pose. This is a convention of a real media product, it has he looking directly into the camera, showing depth and the illusion she is looking through the magazine right into the audience's eyes. I do like this photo, though with feedback form y target audience, I have realised that using a female model just isn't what they want. I have yet to find another male model to volunteer to star on my front cover. Though, my target audience did like the convention of my model looking stragiht into the camera. I will definaltely be using this technique in my final photo. The lighting here is good, however i think this is mainly to do with the fact that the quality of the flash ad camera, itself is very good as it is a very expensive camera used from school. I have realised that the quality in pictures differs when using more expensive, technical cameras.

Sample photo for front cover 2

After asking my target audience what they think of this 2ndphoto I am sure i am not going to take this image further by using the model again or the style of this photo. with my friends opinions and my own, i have come to the conclusion that this photo is too 'pretty' for the genre of music magazine i am going for, this photo will just not attract the audience i am looking for and the photo has no personality to it or 'pazaz', as one of my friends who fits in my target audience told me. I now am going to stick away from photos with outdoor lighting and high white balances. I have now to take some photos with darker balances, maybe using black and white or taking photos in a dark room with a good quality flash. i am quite adament on my main photo for my cover to be quirky, eye-catching and intresting so that my audience will want to read more into the magazine.

Sample photo for front cover 1

This is one of my first shots to be used on the front cover, I have gone for a standard indie pose-guitair in hand, bent down looking away from the camera, originally i wanted something like this, though once asking friends who fitted in my target audience, i realised using this kind of imagery wouldnt stand out to them.i showed them a range of other photos i had taken and asked them which one caught their eye most, and which one they would rather read about in a double page spread. The photo quality isn't great, but i am not too botherd as this photo was only a sample to what i may have used. if i did use this photo i would place my model on a plain background on a flat wall, not in the corner, this would make it easier to crop.

Photo ideas of guitair for contents.

This first photo of the guitairs is taken from a low anlge, making

the gutair look like it has power and a vast amount of significance. I like the lighting i have captured for this photo, the natural lighting was quite dim, and so i used the flash on my camera which is an ordinary flash. It gives the illusion that the keys at the end of the long bit are far away and the guitair is very long, and it makes the big bit of the guitair-the main bit, look vry powerfull and demanding.

I really do adore the lighting of this photo, as unlike the previous one above, sunlight from a window behind the wadrobe i have stood the guitair against, is shining onto the guitair in this photo as i have placed it differently, in this shot it is lying flat on the ground, with the tip of it pointing at the sunlight.

This snap is kind of like the 1st one, though the lighting is much brighter-which i actuslly prefer, and it is slightly further away, which means more of the guitair is shown. The contrast of the black and white panels on the guitair are more highlighted in this photo because of the better quality flash.

Guitar and Speaker-Contents page photo analysis.

The structure of this photo will be used in my contents page. Though the quality is bad and also the lighting. I like the style of this photo because its just simple, the contents page photos in my magazine don't need to be interesting as such as the layout will be quite interesting and quirky. Also because of the lighting, which is just natural sunlight, the colours of the props look very faint and boring.

Target Audience

This is Kara, she is an example of my target audience. She is 19 and currently interested in fashion photography and partying. Her types of friends include boys in bands and her best friend Jolie, is the lead singer in a band 'Pulp'. She currently lives in the inner city of London with her best friend in a studio apartment, where she has lived for 7 months. She took an art and photography course at LCF but unfortunately quite due to plagiarism in the first term she had to leave. Her parents weren't happy about this but let her stay at her apartment to focus on photography, her parents have never been really concerned about her well being as such as they both work full time for major companies and never had time for her, this was upsetting for her growing up and probably caused her to want to be different in the sense of style and personality. She likes to shop in Topshop, though she will only shop in the boutiques as she hates to be seen in something some one else is wearing. She occasionally shops in charity shops and when she does she isn't embarrassed. She wears heavy makeup when going out at night time, but sticks to casual rock chick makeup during the day.

Kara doesn't have the best reputation, she has had multiple boyfriends whom she has slept with, though she claims she loved them all. And so people tend to judge her, though her friends know she is a caring affectionate person. She doesn't like to look too nice to people as she doesn't like to trust many people, this is because of her troubled past. She only keeps few people close as she knows everyone will eventually leave. She loves loud nights out and eating kebabs. She does like her alone time though, she listens to music constantly, this is her only vice, along with Tic-Tacs, she could eat Tic Tacs for England. Her favorite artists include: Kasbian, Paramore, MGMT, Friendly Fires, Kings of Leon, Maroon 5, Artic Monkeys and Greenday. This are her daily listens, though when out she likes to go to clubs that play trance, dance and house.

When she isn't photographing, out, or hanging about with Kara, she's probably at home watching TV with a tub of Ben and Jerries on her bean bags. Her favorite TV programmes are Friends, Skins, Take Me Out, Lost and Eastenders. She also loves to watch Never Mind The Buzzcocks but doesnt enjoy it as much as Simon Amstell left. Her favorite male celebs include Simon Amstell, Luke Pasqualino, Johny Depp and Liam Gallagher. Kara is a good exaple of who i want my target audience to be.

Maslows Hierarchy Of Needs

Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a theory in psychology, proposed by Abraham Maslow in his 1943 paper 'A Theory of Human Motivation'. He created it to show human innate curiosity. It is shaped as a basic pyramid, with a standard wide base at the bottom, representing basic human needs such as food and water, and towards the top showing human self actualization and the ability to be individual. The lower four layers of the pyramid contain what Maslow called the 'deficiency needs' if these needs are not met the body gives no physical indication. Most of media advertisiting is based around this. This gives us as the audience what we need which is shown by the top three sections of the pyrmid, shwoing that if whatever were looking at looks creative and not broing showing us that we need something busy and creative to find it remotly intresting. This has been copied from wikipedia.

Third double page spread

This double-page spread consists of a main photo, and big title, sub heading and text. The photo really portrays the personality and attitude of the band, the dark colours used show the danger of the band, they are all wearing masks which keeps their identities from being seen. This means they could be embaressed of their looks or just dont want the havock of any one seeing who they really are-kind of like batman. Their tattoos are stereotypically a symbol of strength and meaning, this is a typical rock style. Thy have their hoods up to again keep their identities hidden. Black is stereotypically used as the colour for indie/rock. The same colours are more or less used throughout, these are black and white, mainly shows the darkness and doom, this is the common stereotype for rock music. Purple and orange have been used for the sky, this compliments the black and white tones and highlights them infront of the orange/purple. Their masks are all diffferent, they are each showing their different personalities. They are all looking into the camera and downwards which makes them look superior, like they are stronger than us, this shows their idolisation and fame.

The whole image of the band is used as the background and writing is over the top, the layout is simple, yet very interesting. The left side is used to show the photo, the band, and the right side for writing, the interview. White font is used to stand out on top of the photo so that no text box is needed. this works well

First double page spread

This Kerrang double page spread is featuring Fall Out Boy. The layout is simple so that the writing is basically taking over the left hand side of the piece and the photo is used as a background and fully seen on the right hand side. This picture is taken in a black and white setting as this style is very indie and typical of a rock magazine. Another statement colour to go with the black and white theme is red, this shows anger, love and a sense of sexiness. A pug has been used to show a competition, red has been used on the black and white photo to draw readers attention to the pug by contrasting the colours, also this colour has been chosen to give the feeling of love, to win the competition playing on the readers feelings. White writing is used on this pug to standout. The pug has been specifically placed here to make sure the reader sees it when they turn the page, and no standard human being would read a magazine backwards, really. The main headline is big, dynamic and powerful. it is used in quotations to show that it is a quote from the band, this will draw readers attention to the bold statement and make them want to read more about it. The first word of the quote, 'ANYTHING' has a block colour of white with what it looks like red spray paint or blood across the dominating half of the word, this is to show the power and. Different sizes of font have been used in the headline to have more effect on the reader. The sub heading is in a much lower sized font, this is to give an insight to the interview. The first word-'EXCLUSIVE' has been written in red to grab the readers attention, this tells them that here they have an exclusive story that no other magazine have and would make the reader want to read that magazine. The photo has been taken from a low angle to look up to the band whilst doing 'their thing' this makes them look iconic and higher than the readers interested in them. It shows their popularity and fame.

Analysis of 3rd front cover!

The strap across the top is informing the readers that Q is the 'UK's biggest music magazine' it is in white writing on a black blackground to stand out so that it catches the readers eye, this would want to make the reader feel special because they are reading the biggest music magazine in the country. The word 'biggest' is in italic so that it emphasises the fact that it is actually the biggest music magazine in the UK.

Simple font has been used on this front cover to draw the attention towards the photo. The writing is simply trying to get the readers to see what is inside whereas the main focus is the photo. The colour scheme of this front page is Q's standard colours-red, black and white. Black and white contrast and set eachother for being seen and with splashes of red gives the cover some excitement and focus, red represents love, anger, hate and passion and ironically we see all of these in just this photo. A black outfit has been warn to draw attention to him and make him stand out. This works well as the writing flows over the image. The right side of his face has shadow over it, this makes him look gloomy and scary, his overall appearance is quite dark and angry, and this is supported by the action of the photo, he is holding a guitair and stereotypically, as many rock and roll stars do-smash this with it. The shattered effect of the Q is amazing, it makes it look like real glass. This is a clever photo, its dont to draw people in and think 'wow'. On the bottom right hand corner there is a statistic about The Beatles stating '200 things you didnt know', this would draw in any Beatles fans to check it out. The writing has been contrasted, wth the number in 200 which grabs readers attention because everybody believes statistics, and then the rest in grey with The Beatles in white, using the white highlights who it is. The photo used has been given a white border, this highlights the photo as it is quite dark, this makes it stand out. The barcode is simply in the corner hidden out of the way so that it doesnt interfere with any of the info on whats inside, this is because is a useless piece of info really.

Analysis of 2nd front cover!

The wording on this magazine is very simple, the main word is ROCKS as it is in big red font witch takes up the whole bottom line of the page so this catches the readers eye and especially because it is in red it draws them in. The colour gives the feel of the magazine and links with its genre, it gives us an insight also into what is in the magazine. The strap across the is in different font so that it stands out, it is on a plain black background with white writing also so that it stands out. It is mearly advertising the magazine.

The layout of this front cover is very simple and straight forward, this is because the main focus is the photo. Other features on the page are highlighted by using white and red block colours , to contrast from the black and grey photo.
The genre of this magazine is obvious due to the colours used; red, black and white. Red represents love and passion, which amounts to this seductive cover. Black fits in well for this genre, it is usually associated with gothic and indie themes. In complete opposition to black, the white is its contrasting colour which makes it stand out well. The reason these colours have been used together is so the overall feeling is dark and gloomy, with highlights of red and white. The mood of this colour is sexy and edgy. This would obviously attract the core audience of men.
The main photo and only photo used would also attract and draw in males, this sexy photo of singer Cheryl is very edgy and risky. The red lips represent love ans passion which also work with the colour scheme of the magazine which is red and black. The use of her tongue shown in this photo plays on a very attractive and sexy vibe. Plain, and obviously, wet hair works well as the makeup is quite heavy. This is done so the balance is kept and men focus on the oral area, making them want to see more photos like this and would obvsiouly be drawn in to read more.

Analysis of first front cover!

the skyline at the top of the page stands out in red, with white writing a rhetorical question asking the readers if Blue is back together? This would draw the reader in, it is used as a type of anchor. The answer in black font, both these lines are in black and white against the red bacground to stand out to catch the readers eye. to the right, a yellow splash showing V-Festival logo catching attention music festival fans, telling us that they know the full line up, and telling us the page to go to to see. this would make us feel like we have back stage knowledge.
NME logo, behind main photo. NME in capital letters in re to stand out, the colour is very exciting and fun and it is outlined in white to make it look bigger to grab attention like 'look at me im here'. The main photo of band The Gossip, is center, Beth Dito tilting her head down, sunglasses on but looking above them straight into the camera to make it look like she is looking at the reader. this would catch their eye, like they have eye contact. Her eyes have been edited-they have been whitened to stand out.

With her band members behind her, looking over her shoulder, this is like they are backing her up. Heading-main title, center of the page, infront of the photo is big bold letters, in white outlined in black to make it stand out and look bigger. The subheading, hanlf in red, half in white, to show contrast. The words SEX has been written in red to grab readers attention, could have been below but red is more catchy and also the colour of sex. TV show SKINS is being talked about in the magazine as it says in the subheading, it is also a pun as it is the TV show in which the gossips most famous song, ‘standing in the way of control’. There is a white strap across the page under the subheading, still over the photo, in white, with red loud writing showing what else will be in the interview with the band. In the bottom right hand corner is the barcode, hidden away out of sight, making reader concentrate on the main article and other features. Strap across the bottom, mentioning another band and how their album has been rated. 7 other bands are advertised that there is info about them inside the magazine to grab readers in to read about them.

Along the left side of the front cover is the other featured stories. The first one is clearly MUSE, on a red background, white writing has been used to stand out and to make the writing look bigger than it actually is, it has been embossed in black.

But Hey! Keeeeep Blogging! :)

Embossed with black outlining catches the eye.
